Description

We have been bending and fitting antique replica convex glass (also known as bubble glass or domed glass) since the early 1970s, and we currently stock most antique sizes and shapes along with their modern equivalents. Although oval convex glass is most popular with our Vintage Collection of frames, our convex bubble glass will fit any frame we make.

Measuring Convex Glass

Oval Convex bubble glass is measured just like oval flat glass, measuring length and width directly across the glass (not around the bend of the glass). Oval convex glass generally has a depth of between 3/4" to 1" although deeper bends are possible. The most popular sizes often seem unusual such as the Oval 13 1/2" x 19 5/8". Many people are concerned that these odd sizes are no longer available or will require custom bending fees. However, we stock many of these unusual antique sizes, and most often no custom set up fees are required.

Although we stock 15 standard sizes of oval convex glass, we also custom bend any size of convex bubble glass up to 20" x 24". Each custom bend requires a paper tracing of the size required. The line you draw will be the line the glass is cut to. You will need to allow 3-4 weeks delivery after we receiving the tracing to produce your custom size convex glass.

History

Although oval picture frames make up less than 5% of all picture frames produced today, this has not always been the case. Over half of the picture frames produced in America by some the largest picture frame factories in the late 1800's up to about 1940 were oval picture frames, round picture frames, or antique octagon picture frames. A large percentage of these frames were used to frame family portraits with convex glass. Today many attics and basements are home to these family heirlooms framed in antique frames and often broken convex bubble glass.

Victorian Frame Company has a long history of bending convex glass replacements for these images. Our glass bending started in the early 1970’s and today we continue to manufacture convex glass along with a unique collection of antique replica frames. See our Vintage Collection of frames.

Uses of Convex Glass

Most oval convex glass is used to cover antique portraits in which the photographs themselves were also convex. We produce convex glass to fit our own antique replica frames, and also can supply an oval convex glass replacement to fit actual antique frames. We also regularly produce convex glass replacements to replace broken pieces in clocks, gauges and other instruments.

The Bending Process

Convex Glass is made by laying flat glass into frame molds and heating the glass to temperatures that allow the glass to slump. Longer heat creates a deeper bend.

Deep Convex Glass or Acrylic Domes?

Oval convex glass normally has a bend of about 3/4" to 1”. If you are displaying an item that has more depth than a photo or canvas, then you may consider using our oval acrylic domes which fit all our frames and range in depth from 2.5" up to 7". To view our acrylic domes click here.

I am very pleased with my glass for my antique frame. It was shipped extremely fast, and it was packed so well that it made it in one piece.

    wrong size

The glass I ordered is too big. Can I return for a smaller glass? Otherwise I would have been so pleased with it.

    Great Find!

I had been looking for the convex (bubble) glass for quite awhile. I even checked out bidding sites. They were higher, as they charged over $0.00 just for the shipping (which is free here). The service was great, arrived in 4 days.

Domed glass for antique picture frame

Posted by Toni Beauford on 8th Feb 2014

I ordered my glass while on the phone with your company taking measurements. When the glass came it did not fit but it is a very old frame and it and the picture it holds are very dear to me. I ended up taking the glass to a stained glass person who worked on the glass and we were able to make it fit but it was very costly. Bottom line is now my frame is complete but not without great cost and perhaps better advice would have been for me to have shipped the frame and have had you to do it custom. These antique frames are simply not standard.

    Preversed fammily photos

Posted by Unknown on 20th Sep 2013

I had 5 family photo's from my Mother that all required the oval frames with convex glass. They had all been out of frames for almost 80 years and showed some wear but not bad. I started collecting the frames one by one and have finally completed the set of five and they are all the same tiger wood. Three of the frames needed the convex glass. I was able to get the correct size from Victorian Framing co. for 2 of them. The third was an odd size. They were able to cut a custom glass for me but it would have been more than twice the cost of the glass 1/2" larger. I ended up ordering another frame and glass from another vendor for half the price. The glass they sent came packaged and whole in a timely manner. I now have a beautiful set to finally put on the wall!

    a family tresure saved

Posted by Unknown on 7th Sep 2013

I have possession of a painting of my grandfather in his navy uniform from the WWI. This painting was in an oval faux tiger painted, wood and plaster frame with convexed glass. The painting was damaged in a fire that destroyed my parents home back in 1989. The frame was badley damaged, the glass was broken but the portait itself was in pretty good condition. I received the remains of the portrait when my Dad died in 1996. Until now, I thought I would never be able to restore this family treasure but by chance I game acrossed your web site and found exactly what I needed. I've told everyone of your company and how quick and friendly you were. Thanks for making it possible to once again be able to display my Grandfather's portrait.

    Fits perfectly!

Posted by Clara on 29th Aug 2013

Have an antique wood carved painted picture of mother & father-in-law incased in glass. The front convex glass got broken, could not find anyone locally to replace it. Found Victorian Frame Co. online, called & they were very helpful in measurements. It fits perfectly. Thanks so much, now family heirloom will be saved. Clara
